Fall Day trip – Franconia, New Hampshire

Pumpkin spice, apple cider, orange leaves, hay rides , chilly nights….Yay, It’s Fall!

I got to go on a last minute Fall road trip to New England to catch the colors. The first week of October was a little early but we did get some beautiful views during the trip.

The thing about Fall colors is that, there is never a perfect time and the foliage depends on a lot of factors like temperature, environment etc. But you are going to enjoy the views and colors regardless !

Here is an itinerary for a quick day trip to FranconiaNew Hampshire 🙂

With such a limited time we decided to attack the little town of Franconia and the spots around that area.

Where to stay: Franconia Inn, it is truly a charming country Inn with great amenities. The room was quaint, clean and cozy. They provide free wi-fi. They have a game room with foosball, ping pong, arcade games, dartboard etc, horse riding, hot tub and swimming pool. We couldn’t enjoy all these amenities but if you do spend more than a day , this a great place with a reasonable price. The food was delicious as well.

There is absolutely no phone signal so be prepared with a map. And there is no TV in the room so do have things in mind to entertain yourself with 🙂

Places to go:

Robert Frost Place : My top spot in the trip. Mainly because we were the only ones at that time. The below picture is the view Frost had from his porch and room. The story goes that he wanted to stay in this place for inspiration and penned a lot of poems. Behind the house is a short trail with his poems on the way. It definitely is not a top attraction but as the only people around we found the whole idea kinda romantic.

Echo Lake Beach:

Echo lake beach was not really on our list , we chanced on it as we stopped at a parking lot trying to get some GPS signal to find the route to Flume Gorge. Very lucky find I should say. Being Monday there were not many people visiting so yet again a quiet spot to hang out and drink in the views.

Flume Gorge :

The Flume Gorge is a natural gorge extending 800 feet horizontally at the base of Mount Liberty in Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire. The hike is 2 miles to the top or you could opt to take a bus and just do the final leg to see the gorge.

I had read in another blog about how the grilled cheese at the cafe is really good and it really was 🙂

There are a lot more places to visit around the area if you can spend couple more days. Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway that offers views of New England, Lost River Caves for some adventurous tours and of course the famous White Mountains.

Where are you going this Fall?

  3. This looks like such a lovely little excursion! You’re so right about Autumn. Blink and you’ll miss it. It really is the most awesome season (I mean it literally), but unfortunately for me, I don’t get to enjoy it for as long as I’d like. I never cared for Autumn until this year actually. Now I don’t want it to go… even though a lot of good things happen in the winter (LOL, lots of opportunities for cake!)

  4. Great post and photos Jan. I have not been up that way in years, but your photos and descriptions make me want to go back. Especially to that Echo Lake Beach. Wow!
